The cake was fabulous!
My wife was really taken aback with the cake. It was her birthday today and it literally bought her to tears. The cake was fabulous!
In her childhood, when she had her birthday parties - finger sandwiches, jelly in the paper cases, etc. - her father always used to buy her a cake from Days. Sponge with jam and butter cream filling, white icing and pink writing. She said she missed the cakes and would love one, but it had to be from Days!
We cut it after lunch today, and this bought her memories, and tears, back. Reminded her of what her father used to buy for her. I have every confidence that we'll be back next year for another one!

My family were evacuated to Ashwell during the war
My family were evacuated to Ashwell during the war when I was a young girl. We stayed in the village and enjoyed the products of your bakery for 10 glorious years. My uncle, Bob Bird worked for the bakery in Ashwell after leaving school, shortly after the war.
I read in the paper you were shortlisted for an award and was delighted that such a deserved recognition is in the offing. My very best wishes.

Well stocked & friendly staff
I’ve not been to Ashwell for decades and today I had 30 mins to kill whilst waiting to pick someone up nearby. I parked outside the village stores and wandered down the main street where I happened upon Days bakery. Ashwell has so many picture post card houses and pubs but the bakery - which I didn’t know about - was a nice surprise. Well stocked, bubbling with people, friendly staff, sandwiches, pastries and bakes galore. I went for a simple trio of plump iced doughnuts to takeaway. These were served in a proud blue box ‘Days - Hand made in Ashwell - est 1741’.Â
The box prompted me to go online to see the history of the bakery which must be one of the UK’s longest surviving bakeries. That put a little spring in my step. The buns survived the ride home and were delicious. I wish I’d paid a bit more attention to what else was on sale had I realised how old the shop was. But everything looked superb.
